Darkspark, founded in 2011 by Melissa Larkin and D'Ari Lisle, is an arts organization supported by ordinary people who believe small actions can make a big difference in the world. The founders took a small step. Now Darkspark is a growing community of multicultural change makers who intend to make a meaningful difference - bridging cultural division by investing in experiential opportunities for youth, based on music and pop culture.
Darkspark collaborates with youth to create and release pop songs to help reduce prejudice and promote cross-cultural understanding. Darkspark envisions an inclusive society that respects and celebrates diversity, in which engaged youth understand the power of their voices and use them for social change.
Darkspark works closely with schools, communities and individuals to meet their unique goals. Its talented and diverse network of professional singer-songwriters and producers guide program participants by applying a tested arts-based teaching methodology to the process of conceptualizing, writing, recording and releasing pop songs.
Darkspark uses the cornerstones of engagement and inclusion to develop customized in-depth lesson plans, one-on-one writing sessions, and recording time in a mobile recording studio. Whether musical or not, Darkspark's programs include and engage everyone.
Its programs build confidence, self-esteem, tolerance, community, entrepreneurship, creative problem-solving and media literacy skills through creative delivery of standard curriculum - invaluable competencies both inside and outside the classroom.
Darkspark was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2016 to continue and grow the vision of its founders and supporters. It is governed by a voluntary board of directors.
All youth who participate in Darkspark programs are offered the opportunity to participate in the organization as non-voting members of the Corporation.
Darkspark respects the intellectual property of all artists and students who participate in its programs, as well as the rights, experiences, cultures and traditions of all Peoples.
